There is a huge controversy going on in World of Warcraft land with Blizzard/Activision’s recent news to implement RealID on their forums. What this means, no more character names as posting names, but rather your full IRL name.
This has upset plenty of WoW gamers, for numerous reasons. No-one wants their real name associated with a fantasy games. That puts potential Google searches in jeopardy. What if this super hot chick hates “video games”? Googles you, then finds your Lvl 80 Warlock? Blizzard is intentionally cockblocking the Internet.
Matteob the Gnome sums it up nicely:
The forum post has become a runaway train, with many folks absolutely hating the idea. There’s even a statistics page set up for it. Almost 45000 posts. Damn yo.
WoW gamers have their reasons, and have even started a blog on Blizzard employees, showcasing what info they can find with just their names, urging Blizzard to reconsider.
This will also most definitely stop celebs from playing WoW and we don’t want that! This spoof video sums up what this RealID posting unleashes upon the world:
Ignorance is Blizzard.
